Former Slave Dies At a Ripe Old Age

Nimrod Warren, an aged colored man of this place, passed away early Wednesday morning at his home on East John street. He was aged 84 years and was born in slavery on the plantation of Thomas O. B. Carter, in Fauquier county, Virginia, where he lived until about 18 years of age. His master dying, by his will freed all his slaves and directed that they be taken to a free state and land be purchased for them. The terms of the will were not fully carried out and eight additional years were spent in slavery under the master's executor. Later, they were brought to Bedford county where very poor land in Cumberland Valley was purchased for them. Here he married Rose Tilghman, a companion in slavery.

He served about two years in the Civil War, enlisting in Company H [other records suggest he served in Company C], Forty-third Pennsylvania [sic, actually USCT] volunteers. He was in a number of important engagements and was a brave soldier, he participating in the charge at the mine explosion in front of Petersburg, Va. His wife passed away and after his return to this county he married Winifred Alexanger, another companion of slave days. Three daughters surive him. The funeral will be held on Friday, the Rev T. J. Wynn conducting the services and interment in Mt. Ross cemetery, west of Bedford.

Obituary

As his obituary above reports, Nimord Warren was born into slavery in Fauquier County, Virginia. We have located a transcript the will of his master, Thomas O. B. Carter, which appears in Will Book A, p. 217 of the Fauquier County, VA, Wills. The second item of the will reads as follows:

Secondly. I direct all my slaves, including such as may have fallen to me by my mother's will, and my part of the dower of negros of my late mother, which I get by my decd [sic, deceased] father's will" shall be fully emancipated immediately after my death, and their expenses born to any part of America, or of the world, to which they may choose to go; those that have families be supported until their children are grown; and the aged and infirm, including my servant Jesse, to be supported through life. The other single ones to have one years suppport allowed then after they remove.
