In 1768, Lancaster, Carlisle, and Philadelphia, were settled towns, but western
Pennsylvania was still frontier land and open for settlement by those brave enough to face the
many dangers. The French and Indian war brought hostility to the whites settled there. Death came
in many guises, but still people faced the wilderness in a bid to create a better life for their families.
The Warren family had traveled to America from England, then were separated to
work as indentured servants. Jacob and Mattie, the two youngest of the family, stayed with their
mother while their father and elder brother Eli worked elsewhere.
Now father has been freed and is coming to get them so they might move westward to
the PA frontier.
Along their journey, they meet a young woman who is nearly a slave and a young boy
who survived an Indian massacre. The Warrens suffer attacks from hostile Indians and face the
challenges of taming this new land to achieve their dram of a home and farm of their own. Jacob
takes a job working for the commander of Fort Bedford and Mattie faces death in a very personal way.
